St Helens has been a favourite summer holiday destination for as long as Tasmanians have been holidaying. This idyllic seaside town is positioning itself as one of the must ride MTB destinations in Australia. World Trail, the team behind the world famous Blue Derby network of MTB trails, have been busy in the hills behind St Helens carving out their signature ribbons of singletrack.

From the 44km Bay of Fires Epic, to the 66km St Helens stacked network, this region promises to offer a variety of trails and experiences like no other in Australia.

ACCOMMODATION + FACILITIES

St Helens is a well established holiday destination with an abundance of accommodation, a full supermarket, and a selection of eateries and cafes to choose from. It still pays to plan and book early; don’t underestimate how popular this region is, particularly in the peak holiday periods.

There is a wide variety of accommodation on offer, with basic options from beach side camping to dedicated MTB Bunkhouses for smaller groups and individuals. For medium to large size groups, there is an array of private houses available, from ‘shacks’ through to luxury beachfront abodes with views across the Bay of Fires. We work with a number of local providers in St Helens and Binalong Bay, and can look after your accommodation needs if required, meaning less hassle for you.

There are a variety of food and drink options within the St Helens township itself. The Social is one of our favourites, this casual beer garden is the perfect spot to sit back after a day on the trails and enjoy some street food, tapas and local craft beers. For lovers of seafood, The Wharf Bar & Kitchen is the place to go. Situated on the waterfront they serve local oysters, great burgers and take-away fish ‘n’ chips. If you’re looking for a coffee, pop in and see Marika at Coffee Away, a locals favourite in the main street of town.

Being an established holiday destination, there are plenty of great eateries and places to visit, but you’ll have to join us to discover all of our secrets…

THE TRAILS

St Helens is promising to be the new jewel in the crown of Tasmanian mountain bike destinations. The Bay of Fires 44km epic MTB trail starts at the existing Blue Tier trailhead and descends its way towards the east coast of Tasmania, finishing at the pristine white sands of Swimcart Beach. You will experience the full spectrum of landscapes and terrain; descending from alpine heath you will ride through lush rainforest and past giant boulders, finishing off with a fast and flowy 8km descent through eucalypt forests to the sand. The trail itself is made up of 34km of newly built dedicated MTB singletrack, and 10km of existing gravel roads; mostly descending but with a reasonable climb in the mid-section of the ride. We offer a range of options to experience this trail, and our dedicated private group shuttle service means you won’t be waiting around for others to join the group before you head off.

The 66km St Helens stacked network of MTB trails are on the southern edge of town, accessible from either the Flagstaff Rd trailhead, or from the town itself via a coastal link trail that follows the edge of Georges Bay. There are seven loop trails that can be ridden from the Flagstaff Rd trailhead, with a good variety of distance and difficulty levels. There are also four gravity trails that are accessible from the shuttle drop off point on Loila Tier; these descents can also be accessed from the main Flagstaff Rd trailhead via the longer loop trails.

Please note that official trail maps and names have not yet been released, we will update our maps and information when the Break O’Day Council releases the official trail maps.

EXPERIENCING ST HELENS

To make the most of the St Helens MTB trails we recommend three days of riding. This allows a full day to experience the 44km Bay of Fires Epic and two days to explore the stacked network of trails in St Helens. There’s a lot on offer in the region and we recommend visiting the local oyster farms and wineries, or just chill on the beach and soak up some sun.

To truly experience this incredible region, we offer five and six day packages that include Derby, the Blue Tier and St Helens. These packages include your transfers, accommodation, shuttles, and all lunches and dinners. Let us take the hard work out of planning and look after the logistics. For more information please check out our multi-day experiences. We can also create a custom package for your group, tailored to your riding desires.
